Who We Are
The Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation
Yocha Dehe – pronounced YO-cha DEE-hee – means “home by the spring water” in our native Patwin language, and takes us back to our origins, our roots, our land. As the historical inhabitants of California’s Capay Valley, our homeland is at the heart of our culture and heritage.
We are a forward-looking, independent, self-governed nation that supports our people and community by strengthening our culture, stewarding our land and creating positive economic impacts and security for our future generations.
The Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians
The Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians, one of the remaining 12 bands of the Kumeyaay Indian Nation, have lived in the San Diego County region for over 10,000 years. The Viejas Band occupies a 1,600-acre reservation in the Viejas Valley, east of Alpine, California. Like other federally recognized tribal governments throughout the United States, the Viejas Band has a "trust" relationship with the federal government and interacts with the federal, state and local governments on a government-to-government basis.
The Viejas Band is one of the nation's most respected gaming tribes for its entrepreneurial vision, political advocacy of economic sovereignty, commitment to the preservation of the Kumeyaay culture, and long-standing support of community and charitable organizations.
The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation
Members of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation have resided in and around the foothills of the Dehesa Valley for more than 12,000 years. Today they are a modern government providing public services to their members, employees and neighbors. The Sycuan Tribal Government operates one of the region's premier Indian gaming and resort facilities, the Sycuan Casino and Resort. The Sycuan Tribe demonstrates its strong commitment to the San Diego region through the support of hundreds of civic and charitable organizations.
The Tribe, through the Sycuan Tribal Development Corporation (STDC), also seeks to reinvest back into the San Diego community with a progressive business development effort. To date, STDC has purchased the former Singing Hills Country Club and the historic U.S. Grant Hotel; is an investor in Hotel Solamar near Petco Park; and is owner/developer of the Marina Gateway Hotel and Conference Center in National City. Combined, these enterprises now employ nearly 4,000 San Diegans.
